This summer, we will embark on a sermon series titled “Unafraid,” referencing the book of the same title by Adam Hamilton, Senior Pastor at the 20,000-member United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City. For anyone struggling with fear or wondering how families and communities can thrive in challenging times, “Unafraid” offers an informed and inspiring message filled with practical solutions. Join us as we explore how we can develop sustaining spiritual practices and embrace Jesus’ recurring counsel: “Do Not Be Afraid.”

FOMO, the fear of missing out, has become a trendy expression on social media, but the phenomenon is not new. There is always something better just around the corner. FOMO produces great anxiety. In our scripture today, we will learn, as King Solomon did, that having many possessions and great delights is not a recipe for happiness. We will look at how to experience what Saint Paul calls “the life that really is life.”

Salt and Light

Matthew 5: 13-16

Jesus tells a story about salt and light to teach us how special we are and to encourage us to share that specialness with the whole world! Salt is a chemical compound of sodium and chloride, and it is tough to break down and lose its flavor. If salt has been compromised to the point where it is no longer salty, it is no longer considered salt. Jesus is trying to remind his followers that we are to live a life of authenticity and not to lose what makes us unique. Light helps us see. We don’t really see light; we see what light shows us. Jesus encourages His followers to live a life that shows others His love.

Dear God,

Thank you for our many blessings. May we be the salt and light of this earth so that others will know you. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tiny Tots Preschool Dinner & Silent Auction Annual Fundraiser

Tickets are now on sale for Tiny Tots Preschool annual Tri-Tip Dinner & Silent Auction Fundraiser! Join in the fun and support the magic that Tiny Tots creates all year long! Reserve a private table for eight with your chosen guests for $240 or purchase an individual ticket for $35. There will be no ticket sales at the door. We no longer require table hosts to decorate their tables. Just come and enjoy! All proceeds will go towards Tiny Tots Preschool programming goals.

If you are interested in donating a raffle item, or providing a homemade or store-bought dessert, please contact Preschool Director Alexandria Candelario at alex@firstumcmodesto.org or (209) 525-8687. To purchase tickets, please complete the attached form available here, and mail it to the church office or pick one up at the Info Center. The deadline to  donate items is September 5 or purchase tickets is September 10. After that date, only financial contributions will be accepted. We appreciate your support of our Tiny Tots Preschool!

English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes Offered at First UMC Modesto

Sundays | FUMC Library, 16th & I Streets, Modesto | 10:00 a.m.

FUMC Modesto is excited to host an ESL (English as a Second Language) class every Sunday during worship. We aim to help adult learners become more comfortable with their English skills and expand our church community!  Childcare will be provided through our Children's Sunday School. No registration is required.
